Singapore Retail Sales Fall for 9th Month
Singapore's retail sales dropped by 4.3 percent year-on-year in October of 2019, the ninth straight month of fall, after a marginally revised 2 percent drop in the prior month. Sales fell further for motor vehicles (-22.7% vs -12.3% in September), furniture & household equipment (-10.6% vs -9.3%), optical goods & books (-6.9% vs -0.5%), recreatinal goods (-2.4% vs -7.3%), and others (-1.7% vs -0.7%). Also, sales fell further in petrol stations (-6.2% vs -3.3%), department stores (-2.1% vs -1.2%), and food retailers (-0.6% vs -1.1%). In contrast, sales of wearing apparel & footwear grew more (4.7% vs 4.6%), while those of watches & jewelry rebounded (7.2% vs -4.4%). On a monthly basis, retail sales shrank 2.2 percent in October, following a marginally revised 2 percent fall in September.

Singapore Retail Sales Fall for 8th Month
Singapore's retail sales dropped by 2.2 percent year-on-year in September of 2019, the eighth straight month of fall, after a marginally revised 4 percent drop in August and compared to market consensus of a 6.1 percent fall. Declines were seen in sales of motor vehicles (-12.3% vs -20.3% in August); furniture & household equipment (-8.9% vs -9.8%); watches & jewelry (-4.4% vs -8.7%); and recreational goods (-6.1% vs -2.6%). Also, sales fell further in petrol stations (-3.3% vs -3.3%) and food retailers (-0.5% vs -2.4%). In contrast, sales grew for medical goods & toiletries (3.2% vs 3.7%), wearing apparel & footwear (4.2% vs 5%), computer & telecommunications equipment (8.7% vs -0.4%) and optical goods & books (2.1% vs -1.4%). On a monthly basis, retail sales rose unexpectedly by 1.9 percent in September, following a marginally revised 1.2 percent fall in August and beating forecasts of a 1.4 percent decline.

Singapore Retail Sales Fall More than Estimated
Singapore's retail sales dropped by 4.1 percent year-on-year in August 2019, compared to market consensus of a 0.7 percent fall and after a 1.8 percent decrease in July. This was the seventh straight month of yearly fall in retail trade, with sales decreasing for motor vehicles (-20.3% vs 1.5%); furniture & household equipment (-9.8% vs -7.7%); watches & jewelry (-8.6% vs -6%); recreational goods (-2.7% vs -4%); and optical goods & books (-1.3% vs 0.2%). Also, sales declined in petrol stations (-3.3% vs -2.8%); mini-marts & convenience stores (-1% vs -1.5%) and food retailers (-2.3% vs -1.1%). In contrast, sales grew for both medical goods & toiletries (4% vs 1.5%), and wearing apparel & footwear (4.9% vs -1.5%). Meanwhile, sales of computer & telecommunications equipment was flat, after a 7.7 fall in a month earlier. On a monthly basis, retail sales fell unexpectedly by 1.3 percent in August, following a 2.6 percent rise in July while markets had expected a flat reading.

Singapore Retail Sales Fall for 6th Straight Month
Singapore's retail sales dropped by 1.8 percent year-on-year in July 2019, after a 8.9 percent decrease in the previous month. It was the sixth consecutive yearly fall in retail trade. Sales dropped less in petrol service stations (-2.9% vs -3% in June); furniture & household equipment (-8.3% vs -15.4%); and mini-marts & convenience stores (-1.5% vs -2.5%). In addition, sales rebounded for motor vehicles (1.5% vs -32.4%); and those of medical goods & toiletries rose further (1.9% vs 1.8%). On the other hand, sales went down for wearing apparel & footwear (-2.2% vs 1.3%); and department stores (-3.6% vs 0.7%). Also, sales fell at a faster pace for recreational goods (-4.9% vs -3.3%); watches & jewellery (-6.2% vs -4.7%); and optical goods & books (-0.7% vs -0.2%); and those of computer & telecommunications equipment continued to decline (-7.7%, the same as in June. On a monthly basis, retail sales rose 2.6 percent in July, rebounding from a 2.2 percent fall in June.

Singapore Retail Sales Tumble Unexpectedly in June
Singapore's retail sales dropped unexpectedly by 8.9 percent year-on-year in June 2019, missing market consensus of a 0.2% rise and after a downwardly revised 2% decline in the previous month. This was the fifth straight month of yearly fall in retail trade and the steepest since February, with sales decreasing further for motor vehicles (-32.4% vs -7.5% in May), furniture & household equipment (-15.1% vs -7%), computer & telecommunications equipment (-7.7% vs -7%). Also, there were declines in sales of petrol service (-3% vs 1.4%), recreational goods (-3.8% vs 0.7%), watches & jewelry (-4.8% vs 4.6%), and other (-0.7% vs 2%). In contrast sales rebounded for both medical goods & toiletries (1.4% vs -1.6%) and wearing apparel & footwear(1.4% vs -1%). On a monthly basis, retail sales fell unexpectedly by 2.2% in June, the same pace as in May, while markets had expected a 0.4 percent rise.

Singapore Retail Sales Fall for 4th Month
Singapore's retail sales dropped unexpectedly by 2.1% year-on-year in May 2019, missing market consensus of a 0.2% rise and after an upwardly revised 1.9% decline in the previous month. This was the fourth straight month of yearly fall in retail trade, with sales decreasing further for furniture & household equipment (-7.5% vs -6.5% in April ), optical goods & books (-4.9% vs -3.9%), medical goods & toiletries (-1.3% vs -1.7%), and motor vehicles (-7.5% vs -1.1%). Also, sales continued to fall in department stores (-4.7% vs -3.1%), and food retailers (-1.8% vs -3.7%). In contrast, sales rebounded for petrol service (1.4% vs -0.2% in), recreational goods(0.7% vs -1.2%), and watches & jewelry (4.1% vs -2.9%). On a monthly basis, retail sales fell by 2.2% in May, much worse than estimates of a 0.6 percent decline and reversing from a downwardly revised 0.4% gain in April.
